The Cleanse – Day 7

Egg salad on a croissant with crisp romaine and a side of potato chips was the last lunch I ate before beginning The Cleanse. It tasted soooooo good and as I anticipated the next 21 days, I truly enjoyed every bite. egg saladNow that day 7 of The Cleanse has nearly come to an end, I began thinking about how I felt after eating that lunch – yes it was delicious – but afterward I felt really full, bloated, and of course I ate waaaayyyyy too many potato chips. After 7 days of eating exactly what the great minds at Young and Raw have instructed me to (us I should say, Brady and I are both in this together) I have to admit I feel pretty great.  Brady does too. Really great actually! Energy is better than ever, no bloated too full feeling after each meal, and everything has tasted very good with the exception of tonight’s soup, but I’ll muscle through. Take a look for yourself, great website http:////www.youngandraw.com/about/

Why The Cleanse?  For the last 3 years our family has made some enormous changes in our eating habits that began when we bumped into Mila.  Even still, there were improvements that could be made.  So we began attempting a vegetarian way of life in November 2012.  That has been going very well.  However, Brady received a higher than expected PSA reading and my weight is not going down -overweight we felt we needed a reboot of sorts.  We wanted to see if his health concerns and my unending battle with weight loss could be helped by eating clean and so The Cleanse.  (nope that’s not me in the pink but not far off…. actually I do have a before picture that might appear in some future blog.)

The coolest thing about this cleanse is that you actually get to eat.  There is a lot of water drinking, juicing, and smoothies, but there are also delicious salads, wraps and other creations.  All raw and mostly organic fruits and vegetables (depending on what I can find locally) with minimal condiments.  The combinations have been surprisingly satisfying and quite tasty leaving us feeling refreshed after we eat rather than tired and groggy.  That has been a fantastic plus to this journey.  Week two starts tomorrow, I’ll keep you posted on how it goes, but so far I would recommend this highly to anyone looking to improve their overall health & wellness and possibly loose a few pounds along the way.  The old adage keeps popping in my head, “You are what you eat.” Food for thought for us all.photo(9)  We are both excited to see where this will lead.  We’ve already determined that we’ll definitely be including many of the recipes in our life after The Cleanse.  It’s also so much more economical than you might think because of all the things you are not eating and spending money on.  So stay tuned for updates during week two and week three.  I’d love to hear all your comments and feedback on what you’ve tried that’s worked.  Be Well!

Fighting Breast Cancer by Consuming Omega 3′s!

Where are you receiving your Omega 3′s from my friends?  My husband’s Aunt Joanne passed away in July of 2012, breast cancer that traveled throughout her body was the culprit.  What an enormous loss to us personally and to Joanne’s entire family.  We mourn her still.  Our loss is repeated daily in families worldwide.  But can we do something to prevent such tragedies, such suffering?  What if our choice of food was part of the answer?

The study, published recently in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, is believed to be the first to provide unequivocal evidence that omega-3s reduce cancer risk.

“It’s a significant finding,” said David Ma, a professor in Guelph’s Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences, and one of the study’s authors.“We show that lifelong exposure to omega-3s has a beneficial role in disease prevention – in this case, breast cancer prevention. What’s important is that we have proven that omega-3s are the driving force and not something else.”

Breast cancer remains the most common form of cancer in women worldwide and is the second leading cause of female cancer deaths. Advocates have long believed diet may significantly help in preventing cancer. But epidemiological and experimental studies to back up such claims have been lacking, and human studies have been inconsistent, Ma said.

This link http://www.ibcresearch.org/photos-of-ibc/ will help you visualize what breast cancer can look like and please notice it is, as is all disease, inflammation in our bodies.  Reducing inflammation is the key – thus the link to Omega 3′s which are essential fatty acids that reduce inflammation.  This is simple, ingest Omega 3′s in their purest forms and reduce the inflammation in our bodies – be that cancers, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, high cholesterol, high blood pressure…..the list goes on and on.

What are you eating daily to reduce inflammation in your body?Mila from Lifemax

Chia seed, is a food that can be easily incorporated into your daily routine and delivers amazing nutrition.  What one food are you eating every day that provides Omega 3′s, protein, fiber, anti-oxidants, phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals?

Breast cancer is prevalent in both women and men. Our diet and lifestyle contribute greatly to prevention and cure of disease!  If your choice of food can prevent breast cancer among other illnesses why wouldn’t you choose the very foods with the highest nutritional value to enter your body?

So I ask you again, where are you receiving your Omega 3′s from ladies? Gentlemen? Are you aware the fish receive theirs from marine algae – a plant? Humans can and should choose a plant based source of Omega 3′s too! Our bodies recognize and completely use Mila chia seedthe nutrition from a plant, whereas supplements and animal products are 40-60% eliminated and then our bodies try to assimilate the rest.

Why not get complete nutrition from a food that is whole and raw? Mila is a Superior food with a complete amino acid profile. It is enormous nutrition being delivered to every cell of your body and brain on a daily basis.  3000 mg of pure Omega 3′s in every 2 TBSP serving – simple.  Eaten daily this amazing food may create enormous upgrades in your overall health and wellness?  It has been touted as health insurance in a bag.  How about life insurance in a bag?  You are worth $1.58 a day – I know I am and so is each member of my family.  My husband and I have 2 daughters who are now 15 and 12.  They have been eating Mila daily for 3 years and we are teaching them that their food choices affect everything – how they feel, how they think, how they look, sometimes how they act.  Knowing that feeding them this powerful food can also play a role in them not dealing with breast cancer or other devastating illnesses in their lifetime is an enormous bonus.

Choose wisely. “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.” Hippocrates.  I look forward to your comments and replies and to sharing Mila with each and every one of you that take the time to read this post.  Be Well!

Better Than Lap Band Surgery, More Energizing Than Red Bull!!!

Our very own Rachel Garcia, One Star Diamond Director at Lifemax home of the Superior food Mila, is sharing her amazing story.  Why?  Because of her incredible story of success in loosing 30 pounds by incorporating Mila in her daily routine.  Rachel was included in one of the initial weight loss challenges inspired by Mila and designed by Dr. Bob Arnot, author of the just released book The Aztec Diet.  Dr. Arnot monitored the weight loss of participants eating Mila daily and the results were astounding, as in Rachel’s case!

Why Mila instead of retail chia?  Mila is a proprietary blend of 8 different strains of chia packed with Omega 3′s, protein, fiber, antioxidants and more.  Lifemax meticulously grows the chia that becomes Mila, cold-fracture slices the seed to retain all the important components that make it the most powerful chia on the market today.  Many people that had consumed retail purchased chia for years have experienced the health upgrades and amazing difference when they began eating Mila instead.

Where do you get your Omega 3′s from?  How about protein and fiber?  Plant based is best!

Consistency is the key!

We are now mid January, 2013 – so tell me, how did you end 2012?  Was it in such a way that your 2013 is beginning with you feeling energized, vibrant, and ready to create success in your life?

Sound daunting? It doesn’t have to be. During 2012 I spent a lot of time working on myself. This continues to be a work in process I assure you. But of everything I have taken on, the one thing I have realized is that success is accomplished with consistency. Success is relative – it could be personal goals like working out 3-5 times a week (check!) or loosing weight (that’s the plan!); it could be career goals, getting that promotion, starting your own business (doing it!), building a team (a GREAT one!). Success could be related to your family life, personal relationships, or just being more present in the moment when you are with your spouse, kids, or friends. Success could be finally achieving freedom – for me that would be TIME freedom accompanied by financial freedom – yours will be unique to you, but no matter what you define success as, the main thing required to achieve it is consistency. I love to follow Darren Hardy, publisher of Success Magazine and author of The Compound Effect (I recommend this book highly). He stresses consistency above all other practices. Little things do matter and when done consistently over time, success is sure to follow.

So think about revitalizing your nutritional intake – how would you succeed in doing this? Small, consistent changes made over time will create amazing results in your health & wellness.  Incorporate fresh fruit and veggies daily – foods with color enhance your health.  Eliminate processed, fast foods – seriously friends, they are just not providing any nutritional value for you or your kids so just begin removing them slowly and replacing them with food you prepare.  Real, whole, raw food. Yes, time is a factor, but your health is worth it.

Last night I boiled whole wheat rigatoni, tossed in steam organic broccoli with olive oil and various spices, added a warm whole wheat baguette and dinner was served.  My husband loved every bite, my 11 and 14 year old daughters cleaned their plates.  It maybe required 30 minutes prep time to table and I felt good serving it.  Tonight was stir fried tofu with onion, ginger, garlic and an array of colorful veggies like red peppers, celery, carrots, and green onion tossed in then served on a bed of organic couscous.  Also delicious!  None of this is difficult to do, it just requires consistency.

My family moaned and groaned when I first began this journey to healthier living, but honestly they have now embraced it for the most part.  We aren’t perfect and the occasional junk food does enter our home and the 11 year old can be quite convincing about why she desperately needs a soda.  But in the end consistency is the key to success and old bad habits can successfully be replaced with new life changing ones.  Let me know how you do and what great ideas you have to make these changes simple.  Be Well!

What Kids Will Eat

This is an interesting topic as so many kids seem to be picky eaters.  Or possibly we’ve trained them to be.  What I mean by that is often in our busy lives we choose the easy, fast food to fill our stomachs (and our kids) but don’t give enough thought to whether or not there is any nutritional value in what we just put into our bodies.

I was reading an article about edible insects the other day and I’d like to share a bit of it with you, literally food for thought.  In the Central African Republic insects are a staple, much as chicken nuggets are in our country (ewwww).  The difference is insects actually have a huge amount of nutrition.  Insects of all types are an important source of protein for many in this region of the world.  After an evening storm the children run to collect termites, fondly called bobo, tossing them in their mouth with shrieks of delight.  They can be eaten sun dried, roasted with salt, or spiced with hot pepper – you choose. Caterpillar are also eaten throughout the country in various savory dishes.  According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, dried caterpillars contain more than double the protein of beef.  Just 3.5 ounces can provide a large part of the daily requirements of such important minerals as calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and zinc as well as many vitamins.  Additionally, flour made from ground caterpillars can be mixed into a pulp to supplement the diet of undernourished children.

WOW!  I was amazed at learning this information.  Now in Arvada, CO, I can assure you that the 11 and 14 year old in my house would not find termites and caterpillars to be their first choice for an afternoon snack.  That being said, it is also true that our kids will eat and enjoy what we teach them to eat.  Our family has made some major changes to our diet in the past 2-3 years and the kids are on board, but it took time.  Incorporating whole, raw foods in our diet is essential for good health and wellness.  If you aren’t used to that, start small, but definitely start now!

Now you all know that I LOVE MILA (proprietary blend of chia seed) and feed it to my family daily and in every possible way I can think of.  At first my girls (and Brady) looked at it and went, ‘Ewwwwww, I’m not eating that.’ (Much like they would if I served a plate of caterpillars).  Whatever.  I’m tenacious, I knew it was a Super Food, and I knew my family needed the nutrition it contained.  So I pressed on and found ways to make it appealing.  It worked and MILA with it’s Omega 3′s, protein, fiber, antioxidants and more is a staple in our diet.  The benefits to all of us have been enormous.

So how about some practical suggestions for your family?  Shop your local farmers market or grocery stores that offer a variety of whole, raw, organic foods.  Pick up apples, berries, and carrots (organic if possible) and have them ready for snacks and trips to the pool.  Then on a weekly basis incorporate one or two new foods and make it fun for them to give them a try! My girls love smoothies so I’m always trying to concoct a new version for them.  Blend up whatever your family loves, frozen organic blueberries or cherries (fiber, vitamins and antioxidants) (Costco has large bags), water or coconut milk, Greek yogurt (protein), a little honey or agave to sweeten, throw in an organic apple for fiber and you’ve got a great breakfast or afternoon snack.  And everybody knows Omega 3′s are essential so add a 2TBSP serving of MILA and you’ll be including 3000mg of Omega 3′s to feed their brains (and yours).  And they don’t even know it’s there since it blends so well in a smoothie and many other foods.

So while most of you reading this blog do not live in a country where insects are a main source of nutrition, you do live in areas where wholesome, nutritious foods are available.  The effort you put into feeding your family foods packed with nutrition NOW will benefit them for their entire lives.

Those who think they have no time (or money) for healthy eating will soon have to find the time (and money) for illness.  Choose wisely and be well!
